Changing port 1194 to 443
« am: Januar 27, 2009, 14:41:57 »

OpenVPN clients are usually using port 1194/UDP to access the VPN server.

Some users are experiencing problems though because this port has been blocked in their firewall or by their ISP.

Hideway is now offering a solution for this problem: you may access our VPN though port 443/TCP which is always open.

How to change to port:

  • Find the correct configuration file. It has the extension .ovpn and is located ...
    • on Windows XP/Vista: C:\Programs\OpenVPN\config
    • on Windows XP/Vista 64-Bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config
    • on Macintosh OS X: Library/openvpn (in the Home folder of the respective user)
  • Open the configuration file with WordPad or TextEdit. On Vista you have to start the editor with the option "Run as Administrator".
  • Delete any line containing "proto udp"
  • Put a "#" at the beginning of the line "remote vpn1.hideway.eu"
  • Add a line or remove the "#": "remote vpn2.hideway.eu 443 tcp"
  • Save the file

Please note that connections through port 443/TCP are usually slower than through the regular port.

To go back to port 1194:

  • Put a "#" at the beginning of the line "remote vpn2.hideway.eu 443 tcp"
  • Add a line or remove the "#": "remote vpn1.hideway.eu 1194 udp"
  • Save the file

Re: Port 1194 is blocked
« Antwort #1 am: Januar 13, 2010, 09:33:21 »

We are now also offering VPN access with the following configuration parameters:

Server: vpn4.hideway.eu
Port: 443
Protocol: udp
Network adapter: dev tap (change only required when switching from the iOS/iPhone/iPad configuration files)

This might be a faster alternative for those with a blocked port 1194 but with UDP protocol being open.

Edit:
In addition, we have changed the connection's default cipher channel "BF-CBC" to "AES-256-CBC" to accomodate for another customer requests. Therefore, please also add the following new configuration line to the openvpn config file if you want to use this connection:
  • cipher AES-256-CBC

Note:
When switching away from this connection setup to any other server (e.g. vpn1), please do not forget to disable this cipher again by either deleting the whole cipher line or by putting a hash symbol ("#") as the first character on the cipher line to comment it. Otherwise you will not be able to establish a successful and stable connection, due to mismatching cipher settings.

Re: Changing port 1194 to 443 or port 80
« Antwort #2 am: März 21, 2013, 13:12:19 »

Starting from today we are also offering connections on port 80/TCP in addition to the OpenVPN standard port 1194 and the above mentioned alternative ports 443.

Special feature here is that also the used network adapter has changed from TAP towards TUN. This change allows the current OpenVPN client for the iPhone to be used. The following settings have to be amended in the OpenVPN configuration file:
  • Put a "#" sign at the beginning of the line "dev tap"
  • Add the new line "dev tun" underneath
  • Put a "#"-sign in front of every line beginning with "remote ..."
  • Add the following new line underneath: "remote vpn2.hideway.eu 80 tcp"
  • Save the file
From now on the connection should utilise port 80/TCP with the TUN adapter.
